And they\u2019re right, but most people walk in, get completely overwhelmed, and walk out feeling nothing. The trick is simple: don\u2019t try to see everything. The place holds over 20,000 works. Pick your battles.<br>Head straight for Vel\u00e1zquez\u2019s Las Meninas, the painting that\u2019s been messing with art critics for centuries. Then find Goya\u2019s Black Paintings downstairs. They look like something out of a fever dream, and in a way they are: Goya painted them directly onto the walls of his own house when he was old, deaf, and genuinely unsettled. Knowing that makes them hit completely differently.<br><br>The good news: entry is free Monday to Saturday from 18:00 to 20:00, and all day Sunday from 17:00. The main draw is Guernica, Picasso\u2019s massive anti-war painting. Photos don\u2019t do it justice. Standing in front of it in person is one of those quiet moments where you just\u2026 stop. Beyond that, there\u2019s Dal\u00ed, Mir\u00f3, conceptual installations, photography, video art, and rotating exhibitions that feel more like a cutting-edge Berlin gallery than a stuffy national museum. Highly recommend.<br><br>\u2705 Free entry Monday, Wednesday to Saturday from 19:00 to 21:00, and Sunday from 12:30 to 14:30. Also \u2014 find the rooftop terrace. Huge mistake. It covers five centuries of Western art under one roof from medieval to American pop art, and it never feels as packed as its neighbours. <br>It\u2019s also the best place in Madrid for Impressionist work: Monet, Van Gogh, Degas, Edward Hopper. There\u2019s something for every mood here. Go to Matadero. It\u2019s a massive former slaughterhouse in the Arganzuela neighbourhood that\u2019s been turned into one of the most vibrant arts centres in the city. Design, photography, film, live performances, workshops \u2014 most of it free or ridiculously cheap. <br><br>Even if there\u2019s nothing specific on, the space alone is worth the trip. Industrial architecture, huge open courtyards, a creative crowd. CaixaForum sits right in the museum triangle and looks unlike anything around it \u2014 a restored power station with a vertical garden growing up the side of the building. It\u2019s genuinely a great-looking place just to walk past.<br><br>Inside, the exhibitions rotate regularly and range widely: ancient civilisations, digital art, architecture, design. Entry is usually around \u20ac6. There\u2019s also a solid caf\u00e9 and a design bookshop downstairs \u2014 good for a break if you\u2019ve been on your feet all day.<br><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--lg)\"><strong>A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Go<\/strong><br><br>\u2705 The Prado, Reina Sof\u00eda, and Thyssen are all within a 10-minute walk of each other. You can comfortably do two in one day if you pace yourself. All three offer free entry on specific days and hours, plan around those and you can do the whole Golden Triangle for nothing. Weekday mornings are dramatically quieter than weekends. Saturday afternoon at the Prado is not the move.<br><br>\u2705 The \u2018Paseo del Arte\u2019 card gives combined access to all three big museums at a reduced rate \u2014 great value if you\u2019re planning to hit them all.<br><br>\u2705 Matadero and CaixaForum are free or very cheap and almost always have something interesting on. Pick the one that fits your mood, give it proper time, and come back for the rest.
